Helping to protect the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales National Parks
Help us look after the landscape you love. Use public transport, sit back, and enjoy the beautiful scenery. Remember, every sustainable choice contributes to preserving the natural beauty of the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales and Cumbria.
Sustainability
We are committed to sustainable practices that minimize our impact on the environment. From reducing waste to conserving resources, sustainability is at the core of our mission.
Car-Free Days Out
Join us in exploring the beauty of our region without relying on cars. We’ve partnered with Visit Lake District Car Free Days Out which encourages visitors to leave their cars behind and enjoy attractions by foot, bike, boat or public transport. By promoting car-free days out, we contribute to a greener future and wider access to leisure, culture, and nature.
Green Energy Tariff
Our commitment extends to energy choices. We offer a green energy tariff that supports renewable energy sources. By opting for this tariff, you contribute to a cleaner planet while enjoying reliable energy services.
Visitor Donation Scheme for Local Conservation Projects
We believe in giving back to our community and protecting the natural beauty around us. Our visitor donation scheme supports local conservation projects, including repairing footpaths and safeguarding wildlife habitats. When you book, please consider donating to the Lake District Foundation to help preserve our environment.
Helping Local Communities and Charities
We actively engage with local communities and support charitable organisations. From volunteering efforts to fundraising events, we strive to make a positive impact where we operate.

Our Pathway to Carbon Net Zero by 2037
We’ve set an ambitious goal: achieving carbon net zero by 2037. Through continuous improvements, innovation, and collaboration, we’re working towards a sustainable future for generations to come.
Carbon Footprint
We regularly assess our carbon footprint and implement strategies to reduce it. Transparency and accountability drive our efforts.
Water Refill Station
We have installed a water refill station in the shop/reception area to help guests stay hydrated and reduce our environmental impact. The refill station provides clean and refreshing water while helping to reduce the use of single-use plastic bottles, which often end up in landfills or the ocean, harming both wildlife and ecosystems.
Future Plans
Looking ahead, we’re committed to staying at the forefront of sustainability. Our future plans include expanding renewable energy adoption, enhancing community partnerships, and advocating for responsible practices.
Join us on this journey toward a greener, more resilient world!
Our contribution
We continue to be awarded a 5-star and/or gold status in the David Bellamy Conservation Awards. This is awarded to parks that demonstrate policies showing active concern for the environment. Assisted by local nature groups and holidaymakers themselves, the judges look at virtually every aspect of park management, from the protection of plant and animal habitats to the efficient use of energy and recycling.
We're also proud supporters of the Lake District Foundation. All donations made when booking directly with us go towards projects which help nurture the landscapes and wildlife that make this part of the UK so special.
The Countryside Code is a fantastic guide to help us respect, protect and enjoy this beautiful landscape. You can view the full code here.
Help save Ruskin’s View
In 1875, Ruskin described the panorama as ‘one of the loveliest views in England, therefore in the world’.
With its affiliation to art critic John Ruskin and inspired artist JMW Turner, it’s no wonder that this much-loved and celebrated attraction in Kirkby Lonsdale draws visitors from far and wide. However, the viewpoint is now under threat because the Brow (where you stand to look out) is sadly sinking towards the river. As a result, the footpath has been temporarily closed. Without urgent repair work, this famous viewpoint will be lost. The cost is substantial and exceeds far beyond the capabilities of a small town council. Therefore the ‘Save Ruskin’s view’ appeal has been launched, encouraging assistance.
As part of our commitment to helping local communities in the areas where we operate, Lake District Estates has donated £2,000 to the appeal.
